New in trunk: Assault game mode

This won't make it into 2.3 (it's only a few days old and there are no good maps for it)... but anyway.

To make it clear: It won't work in 2.3 or its test releases. You need Nexuiz from trunk.

Nexuiz SVN trunk (not branch-2.0) has an Assault game mode similiar to what Unreal Tournament has.

Start with: nexuiz +set g_assault 1 +map assault2

Defenders have to... defend stuff (in this case buttons that the attackers must push):

Attackers have to push buttons or destroy walls so they can access other areas:

This gamemode needs special maps. I suck at mapping (see the demo map, which is sorta playable... but it just looks horrid).

By default every round takes 5 minutes (this can be changed by the map).

Sounds great, can't wait till i watch the demo.

I hope it has the same style as UT Assault...multiple paths to stuff, and ways to abuse the maps :P

As SavageX already mentioned: this map needs a recent build from svn trunk. It won't work with any 2.x version.

Nice, very very nice... I would love to see what some of this board's talented mappers can do with this :)

Can't wait to see it in game. Would I be correct in assuming it won't make it into 2.3?

I assume that only applies to the server? At least I played it with a vanilla 2.3 Nexuiz.

Two suggestions from me:

Scoring system: shouldn't some points be given for intermediate achievements like pushing buttons? Even though I attacked quite successfully I ended up with 0:23 points...
I also had the impression that the score for finishing the attack is not so high.
Basically, the contribution of fragging to the overall score is very high.

Time limit: Since the rounds have a time limit, I think the global timelimit for the map could be switched off.
Then both teams have the same time available for attacking.

Yes.

Assault is a super sweet mode, because if the mappers use it to its fullest, you can have really cool narratives going on.

A good example of Assault-like gameplay would be WolfET, but seriously, to see it done best, UT2k4 is where it's at. Assault mode in that game has some of the coolest maps I've ever played on.

Question: For Nex's assault, will there be any new entities for turrets and such? I know Wazat had them put into his Team Nex mod, though that was a long time ago. Auto turrets or player-controlled ones would be really beneficial to this.

I'd love to see a turret in Nexuiz. BUT: We need someone to model that first.

But yeah, right. Apart from player models things like interactive objects may be where Nexuiz can improve the most.

Turrets? Now it's going along the path of Quake Wars and Tribes...... but that's not a bad thing. Quake style game play and base defense and deployables! Awsome!

I'd say moreso the path of UT - expanding to new gametypes, but not forgetting its roots as a DM game!

I've not played it yet, but depending how long it took the attackers to attack (and complete the map), that's how long they have to defend it for the next time round..otherwise if you both have a set amount of time..well i think that's not correct, it should be like how it is in UT and 2k4 for that matter.

He's right, the rounds should have a timelimit, but the map shouldn't (unless it's setup so that the map time limit is the same length of the total both rounds can be, and if both rounds finish early it still goes to the next map)

'cause if each round is 15 minutes but the map limit is 20, it's very likely that the first team defending could hold off the attack for all 15 minutes, but when they switch up the game would only have 5 minutes left.

First you need maps designed for assault, but there isn't any, just 1 or 2 concept maps that have been broken by some codes changes ( destruct doesn't trigger the next objective, etc.).
So the assault gametype isn't available in the menu, you need to use the console (g_assault 1; map mapname).
